Unfortunately, fires have been burning throughout all parts of the Western Cape over the last 2 weeks. Fires have been raging from Stellenbosch to Somerset West. To Simonstown through Glencairn and most recently Signal Hill.
While sad and devastating – some people have lost their homes! The environment and animal life lost, it is in times like these that we get to witness unity. The firefighters, emergency services, police, environmentalists, and communities that stand together are a sight to behold. Shows humanity is alive!
During, a tour with my American guests when the first fire broke out 2 weeks ago. We were at Rust en Vrede wine estate at the top of the hills of Stellenbosch. Over the horizon coming from the area of Grabouw we saw and smelt the fires.

The Southern peninsula is home to the Chacma Baboon. Many troops of baboons moved themselves to safer locations. This was monitored by the people and volunteers of Baboon Matters.

Furthermore, more than 1000 firefighters were deployed to battle fires in the Western Cape over the last 2 weeks. Since the start of the fire season, ground crews and aircraft have suppressed 57 fires in the Western Cape. Firefighting aircraft had racked up 432 flying hours. Communities have opened their hearts to these brave Men and Women who serve bravely and courageously, by helping with food, clothes, and even just a shoulder to lean on.
Hence, to all those involved, it is without you that these situations would become unbearably worse. Therefore, I thank you and it makes me a proud Capetonian and proud South African. I am feeling very proud to be South African.
